Teaching Virtual Watercolor

Updated: Nov 13, 2020

I am currently a Public School Art Educator. This year has brought on the rare challenge of teaching Painting in a virtual environment. Nevertheless, I have found that these last few months have been overwhelmingly rewarding so far.

We started out our year organizing our home studios and preparing a journal to keep studies, research and inspiration for the class. To help provide equitable opportunities, quality drawing sketchbooks were given to each student along with a set of paints and brushes. This year we have been busy filling these pages with watercolor techniques, daily sketches and artist mentor research.

I have been working alongside my students to create examples in my own journal. Below are some of the pages that were created to help guide them to make their own work. Now only after a few months, it is clear that nothing can stop our artmaking journey. Through their journal responses I believe I am getting to know them - their interests, their stories- better than ever before. I miss my studio classroom and seeing them face to face but I am feeling grateful for this new experience.
